Joey “Jaws” Chestnut Shifts Independence Day Contest to Fort Bliss, Texas
Renowned competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, famous for his hot dog-devouring prowess, will showcase his skills this Independence Day at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, after a dispute with organizers of the annual Coney Island Fourth of July eating contest. Instead of the traditional Nathan’s Famous event, where Chestnut set a record of 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes in 2021, he will face off against soldiers in a 5-minute hot dog eating contest.
Originally excluded due to a sponsorship conflict involving Impossible Foods, Chestnut expressed disappointment at missing the Coney Island event, which he cherished for its vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic crowds. However, he remains eager to compete, aiming to surpass the combined hot dog consumption of four soldiers, a challenge he views as motivating rather than leisurely.
The “Pop Goes the Fort” celebration at Fort Bliss expects around 15,000 attendees, primarily soldiers and their families, featuring fireworks and performances by the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and the 1st Armored Division Band. Chestnut, preparing rigorously with a fasting routine and dietary measures, anticipates a spirited competition and looks forward to experiencing El Paso for the first time, musing about the possibility of exploring a tank.
Fans can catch Chestnut on Netflix in September, where he will compete against rival Takeru Kobayashi. Despite the current discord, Chestnut remains hopeful about returning to the July 4th competition circuit next year, either through Netflix or at Nathan’s Famous, contingent on reconciling with Major League Eating, the event’s organizers.
For Chestnut, the shift to Fort Bliss represents a new chapter in his competitive journey, emphasizing his adaptability and dedication to his craft amidst challenges with event logistics and sponsorships.
